SUMMARY:
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s The Lottery Ticket
is about a spouse who thought that they won a lottery ticket and then started
to daydream about the prize they thought they would got.
CHARACTERS:
There
are only two main characters in the story: Ivan Dmitritch and his wife. Ivan’s
characters were careless, had a bad thoughts about the other, daydreaming about
things way too far, egoist, temperamental, and greedy. The wife’s character was
a bit similar to her husband. She’s also careless, got offended easily, and dreaming
about something too far.
PLOT:
Ivan
Dmitritch was a man who never believed in a thing such as lottery. But one day,
when he checked his wife’s lottery series on the newspaper he was surprised
that the series was there. The series of their lottery ticket is 9, 499. Before
he even checked the number, he already told his wife about this. Of course his wife felt excited for the
possibility of winning the lottery. She told Ivan to checked the number quickly.
Ivan didn’t want to immediately checked the number. He said that they would
have a lot of time to be disappointed if they didn’t won. So, instead of
checking the number of the series, he began daydreaming about what he would do
if the prize was theirs.
His
first dream was to buy an estate in the Tula of Oryol provinces. He imagined
himself enjoying the beauty and the pleasure of being there.
Then,
he imagined about travelling abroad. He told his wife about this and his wife
said she would love to travel too if they won. Suddenly, Ivan realized that the
ticket wasn’t his, it’s his wife’s. He felt jealous of the image of her
enjoying the prize by herself. He
thought a lot of bad things of his wife if she won the lottery. He even started
to think about their relatives. He thought that if they won, their relatives
would also asked for their money. After that, he look at his wife with hatred
and anger thinking that his wife would own all of the prize. Ivan started to
say that she didn’t worthy for the prize.
By
hearing this, his wife felt offended and threaten her husband. Annoyed by his
wife’s reaction, he instantly glanced and read the winner list on the newspaper
with anger. He finally realized, it wasn’t their lottery’s number. The series
were the same but the numbers weren’t. The number of the winner was 46 and
their ticket’s number is 26. Ivan and his wife fell silent. They regretted for
having an argument because of nonsense thing.
The
place setting of this story was at Dmitritch’s house. For the time setting, the
story took place after the Dmitritch finished their supper, so the story mostly
happened in the evening.
MORAL VALUE:
From
this story, you are told not to be glad about thing too fast. You should always
be aware of the situation first before you do anything. Comprehend the situation
clearly and think first. If you’re not fully aware of the situation, you may
regret it later.
